CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT (COMMISSION)
THE INCIDENT
A New Australian Opera in 2 Acts by William Barton
PHASE 2:
CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT
APRIL 2024
Proudly supported by Melbourne Recital Centre
We are crafting a compelling, beautiful and thought-provoking work of operatic story-telling - facing uncomfortable truths, offering healing and hope - a legacy for our time.
THE INCIDENT is a fictionalised account of the lead up and aftermath of the interaction between Adam Goodes* and a young spectator at the MCG in 2013. Our two-act opera has equal representation of Australia's Indigenous and non-Indigenous creative practitioners.
"We shall overcome our differences as we share in the tears of reconciliation, acknowledging our human faults - but being uplifted by knowing we do care for one another as we strive to create a path that not only ensures a better future for our own children, but for others on the opposite end of the field."

- William Barton, celebrated composer, didgeridoo virtuoso and cross-genre collaborator.

*Adam Goodes is aware of this project and looks forward to "seeing this wonderful project come to life"

We are seeking commissioning partners, funders, sponsors and donors to help fund the World Premiere of The Incident.

This is a rare opportunity to leave your own legacy as part of creating a landmark production, make an cultural contribution to contemporary society, and continue the national conversation on reconciliation.

The Incident Commission Circle welcomes contributions of any size - if wish to discuss types of partnership or flagship support, please phone 0487 411 398 or email e.burke@acoco.org.au to set up a time to discuss.
