Sanatorium Express

Iiro Rantala is an internationally renowned composer of instrumental, musical and film scores.  Sanatorium Express is his first opera.

His second commission is the sequel to Mozart's The Magic Flute for

Komische Oper, Berlin.

With libretto by Minna Lindgren (of Lavender Ladies Detective Agency fame), this comic opera is a hilarious take on modern neuroses.

The patients of Sanatorium Express ask acutely familiar questions:

How do I find peace of mind?

How do I deal with shame?

How can I find empathy?

How do I lose weight in a weekend?

Soprano, on the verge of divorce, arrives at the much-lauded sanatorium, hoping to shed her excess kilos over a weekend. At the clinic of our shameless Healer, Soprano finds herself falling in love with Tenor, who’s looking for peace of mind. The relationship rollercoaster truly gets going when Soprano’s Husband turns up. Only the mouthy Receptionist can stop the ride by revealing a bundle of embarrassing secrets. In the end, despite all obstacles, every patient at the Sanatorium discovers something new about themselves.
