About the event

Opera has an existential problem. It's often seen as a whole lot of competing artforms, lumped in as an exotic, foreign language extravaganza that is to be seen at, rather than be seen for... The 'old stories' are overwhelmingly gendered, culturally inappropriate - holding entrenched prejudices, privilege and societal shackles that new generations seek to change.  Its audience is increasingly multi-cultural. There is no doubt that excellence and quality are valued by audiences, whether they know a lot about the art form, or little.  What do we have to do to create change? Let's address how we change who has public, private & sponsorship money to decide which stories are told. Let's talk about how we change who and what is on and off our stages - and indeed, are stages necessary anymore? Bring your questions, ideas, thoughts and attitudes - We Need To Talk About Opera.
